VANITY | For our selfie-obsessed culture, the desire to look perfectly filtered — in photos and in real life — has never been stronger. In fact, the number of minimally invasive cosmetic procedures has grown enormously since 2000, with no indication of slowing down.
In 2019, the most recent year for which data is available, some 11.36 million plastic surgery procedures were carried out around the world along with another 13.6 million nonsurgical procedures. The data comes from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery or ISAPS.
Some nations have a greater love affair with plastic surgery than others. In 2019, Brazil was the country with the highest number of procedures for which reliable data was available. Brazil had 1.49 million plastic surgery procedures that year, the most common of which were Liposuction, Breast Augmentation and Abdominoplasty.

Elsewhere in the plastic surgery league, Mexico came third with 580,000 procedures, followed by Russia (483,152) and India (394,728). ISAPS also ranks the countries with the most plastic surgeons with the U.S. in first place with 6,900. Brazil comes second with 6,011 while China rounds off the top-three with 3,000.
Plastic surgery procedures are predominantly performed on females who accounted for 86.5 percent of all operations performed in 2019. They also accounted for a similar swathe of all nonsurgical cosmetic procedures carried out that year at 87.2 percent.
Most popular procedures
Worldwide the top 5 surgical procedures for women are: breast augmentation, liposuction, nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, and the tummy tuck.
For men a procedure called abdominal etching uses a new liposuction technique to create a six pack appearance. Essentially, plastic surgeons very precisely suction fat from the abdomen’s superficial and deep layers to accentuate a patient’s natural abdominal lines. Results can be extra-defined or more smooth and round, depending on preference.
